February 16th through March 19th, Unit Galley London will open it’s show featuring digitized works from the masters. 4 Italian galleries, including Uffuzi, have partnered with notable digital art firm Cincello to digitize works from Leonardo, Caravaggio, Raphael, and Modigliani in a show called “Eternalising Art History: From Da Vinci to Modigliani.”
In partnering with the Italian galleries, Cincello uses their internationally patented DAW technology to secure the works, in their original size, on the blockchain. Noted on their website, the platform is highly protected, and each work is certified by the museum housing the work. Quoted from Cincello’s website, director James Bradburn shares, “Is it a reproduction, a copy or a new original? I do not see disharmony between them. Rather, I see the Cinello initiative as a spectrum in which the works of art can be viewed and enjoyed and that lead us towards a deeper connection with our culture”.
In February’s show, each of the works will contain 9 editions, available for purchase with ethereum or fiat. The 4 galleries participating are the Complesso Monumentale della Pilotta in Parma, Uffizi Galleries in Florence, the Pinacoteca di Brera and Biblioteca Ambrosiana, both in Milan. Each work will be sold from £100,000 to £500,000. Each replica will be sold with a signed certificate from both the museum where the art is held as well as Cincello. Once purchased, the buyer will receive a digital screen, replica frame, a built-in drive that generates the image, and the certificate of authenticity. They also receive the digital components: the NFT, and a unique login to the app. The copyright will still be held by the museums of origin.
Why digitize these precious works of art? Well, for starters, the revenues generated from these sales will be shared equally between Until London and the 4 Italian galleries. The funds will then be utilized to finance the preservation of these aged works. An additional benefit is simply to allow for more visibility and attention to these masterful pieces.
Cincello also speaks to the lowering of carbon emissions, negating the need for shipping.
This exhibition is one of 3, and more master works will be revealed in each show.
