Where are you from? (Provide a little bit of your background, have you moved etc)
I am a Greek Australian, and have lived in Greece and the UK. As a Greek growing up in Australia I was told I never belonged. When I went to Greece I was told I was a foreigner there and again I felt that I did not fit in . London was the only place I felt that it didn’t matter where you were from because everyone was from somewhere else.
I moved back to Sydney a few years ago.
Can you tell us about your background and what lead you down the path to becoming an artist and ultimately experimenting with NFTs?
I took art all through high school with the intention of going to art school. I worked on my portfolio and exhibition pieces but decided at the last minute to go to university instead. I ended up studying social work , whilst continuing to paint and write. Moving a lot ,(with little money) meant I ended up leaving paintings and other belongings behind in so many different places. I had an ipad and downloaded procreate so started experimenting with digital art as a way to make it easier to haul things around.
A friend who was in crypto told me about NFT’s and suggested I try it. It took a year before I listened to them – they showed me Fewocious work and I thought yes this is art. So at the end of February 2021 I jumped in head first without a clue about the space. I had no friends who were doing NFT’s. I had recently moved back to Sydney. It was overwhelming to say the least.
When did you mint your first NFT? What platform did you choose and why?
I minted on Open Sea simply because that was the first platform that came up when I did a search. I made so many mistakes with the minting process. I just wanted to get a feel for the process and learn on the job so to speak. I did not understand the block chain or anything. I look back and think oh my god!
Can you tell us one thing you cannot live without?
My children are the most important thing to me. Becoming a mother has made me an inpatient and tired grizzly bear. Which means I have limited time to focus on things that are not important. I make sure I am surrounded with supportive people who uplift each other.
Who is your favorite artist(s) (Non NFT)? What about their style resonates with you?
Chaim Soutine, his painting style and brushstrokes heavily influenced my own work.
Salvador Dali – the use of surrealism and symbolism in his work was groundbreaking.
Picasso – had a variety of styles and his abstract portraiture heavily influence my own style
Cindy Sherman and Julie Rrap these two artists were instrumental in my leaning toward feminist art and using the self and the body/self to tell a story
Who is your favourite NFT artist? What makes this artist unique?
I am attached to Fewocious because I would not be here had I not seen his art. The use of animation with a traditional painting style really influenced how I wanted to move forward.
What made you pursue NFT art?
I don’t like giving up easily, even though there were times I wanted to. I found amazing support networks who helped me through the tough times and were there for me during the good times. I have internet friends who mean more to me than some of my real life friends..
Crypto is an opportunity for people to achieve financial independence. I love that we can help people directly in this space simply by purchasing their work. That is a direct difference made to someone’s life. I see artists here from all over the world, some are living on the streets and see NFT’s an opportunity to change their lives.
I believe that we can achieve change through art. NFT’s are more accessible to a larger portion of the population as compared to the traditional art world where there is a lot of gate-keeping. I love that here you can have a relationship with your collector or be in a chat with amazing artists that otherwise you would never have connected with.
NFT’s have also given me the opportunity to collect art on a larger scale, whereas previously I just could not afford to buy original work from artists.
What is the one piece of NFT art you wish you had purchased but missed out on?
I will have to say that is a Bored Ape, I could have got one before they blew up like crazy and I didn’t. Seeing that amount of money and thinking omg I missed out is mind blowing. Especially as I would never have these opportunities outside of crypto.
If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go? Why this location?
Bahamas because I have never been there and it looks like heaven on earth. I am a water person, I love being near the sea so this would be wonderful. I would do yoga on the beach, then paint, whilst eating fruit….obviously I have thought about this!
What are your other passions besides art? Why?
I love cooking (and eating) and try hard to eat and cook whole foods that are tasty. I am passionate about keeping fit so I do a lot of pilates, yoga and cross training. It helps keep my body and mind in tune.
Do you make other forms of art?
I use writing and poetry to compliment my painting and have always done so. There were a few years where I stopped and I felt myself withering inside. I think we are all creative beings and when we stop exploring those sides of us we limit ourselves.
How did you come up with your specific style?
In highschool we were asked to paint an apple. My painting was expressive and how I saw the apple in my mind’s eye. I was lucky that my art teacher loved it and mentored me throughout my time in high school. I was encouraged to develop my brushstrokes and told to look at the masters to understand their works.
We were given access to the art room on weekends during our last year to complete our work and finish our portfolios.
I was lucky to have that.
How has your style evolved over the years?
Moving from canvas to digital was challenging at first, but it was also exhilarating.
It has allowed me to explore animation, glitch, generative and mixed media. There are so many tools out there that I feel like I am constantly learning and developing.
What is coming in the near future?
The 2D community is something I am really interested in helping to build up here. We recently ran our own exhibition and I felt like I was able to connect with so many more artists.
I would love to do more things that help artists grow from the grassroots. I think the space allows us to create our own opportunities and this is something I am really looking forward to doing more of. I love making connections with other artists here and the buzz that we all get from working together to make things happen.
If you could collaborate with one artist who would it be?
Would have to be Fewocious I am a fangirl over here!
Do you have any upcoming drops?
I am working on some still painted pieces and exploring other new mediums as well so keep your eyes peeled!
